Of the 71 assembly seats across 14 districts in West UP, the BJP had won 51 seats in 2017. The number became 52 after lone RLD MLA Sahender Ramala joined the BJP. The Samajwadi Party had won 16 seats, Congress two and the BSP one. In 2017, west UP had set the tone for the BJP to register an emphatic win and form the government.
