India defeated Sri Lanka by runs in the first T20 International. India batted first and posted a formidable total of 213/7. Sri Lanka was bowled out for 170 in 19.2 overs. Riyan Parag took three wickets, while Axar Patel and Arshdeep Singh took two each. Pathum Nissanka was the top scorer for Sri Lanka with a 79 runs. Suryakumar Yadav led India with the bat and scored58 runs off just 26 balls and was supported by openers Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill. Rishabh Pant missed his half-century after being dismissed on 49. Matheesha Pathirana was the most successful bowler for Sri Lanka with four wickets. This was India's first match under new head coach Gautam Gambhir.
