China refused to release Indian soldiers initially

The refusal to release the captives was a departure from precedents. Soldiers taken into custody during clashes along the LAC are returned at the earliest opportunity, as per border patrolling protocol. For example, after a standoff at Chumar in 2013, a Chinese officer who fell off acliff was rescued by the Indian Army.
