Good manners seem like a quaint phrase in our casual times when social interactions between generations are not generally guided by many rules unlike earlier times. Those of us who went to church-run schools back in the day, for instance, were taught 'proper' behaviour, including greeting everyone with a "good morning!" or a "good day!" and standing up when elders enter the room. Our grandparents and parents added namaste and pranam to this etiquette manual besides using honorifics rather than names when addressing elders.
