Extreme cold grips Nordic countries as floods hit western Europe

For the second consecutive day, temperatures plummeted below minus 40 degrees Celsius (minus 40 degrees Fahrenheit) in the Nordic region. In Kvikkjokk-Arrenjarka, Swedish Lapland, the mercury hit a bone-chilling minus 43.6 C (minus 46.5 F), marking the lowest January temperature recorded in Sweden in a quarter-century, according to Sweden's TT news agency.
